What Does a Wedding Actually Cost in Australia? Here's the Truth.

By The Honey Lane Way

If you've recently got engaged and typed "average wedding cost Australia" into Google, you've probably seen a figure somewhere between $36,000 and $41,000.

I want to talk about that number. Because in 14 years of planning weddings — from intimate backyard ceremonies to seriously spectacular celebrations — I can tell you that figure is not giving you the information you actually need.

Here's the truth.

It's the Wrong Question

Asking what the average wedding costs in Australia is like asking what the average price of a car is. That number is completely useless to you if you're in the market for a Ferrari. And equally useless if you're looking at a second-hand Suzuki Swift.

Weddings work exactly the same way. You could be hosting 20 people in a beautiful backyard or 200 guests at a premium estate. Knowing the "average" helps neither of you.

What actually helps is understanding what your wedding will cost — based on your guest count, your priorities, and what things genuinely cost in the current Australian market.

Stop asking what weddings cost on average.

Start asking what your wedding will cost.

Where to Actually Start

Before you pick any number, you need to understand what things cost. This sounds obvious — but most couples do it the wrong way around. They pick a top-line budget first, then hope it stretches across every category.

The method I use with every couple I work with is different. It combines two approaches:

Bottom-up: Build the budget element by element, based on what things actually cost. Research each category, assign a realistic estimate, and add it all up.

Top-down: Then compare that total to what you feel comfortable spending. If the numbers align — great. If not, you know exactly where to adjust.

Used together, this approach gives you a budget that is grounded in reality and shaped by your priorities. And that is what takes the stress out of wedding planning.

In the Wedding Budget Guide, I walk you through this process step by step — and give you the exact template I use with my own clients to make it effortless.

What Drives Cost in Each Category

Every major wedding category has a wide range of possible spend — and what drives that range is different for each one. A few examples:

  • Venue can range from almost nothing to tens of thousands — but the biggest trap is not understanding what's included. Two venues priced similarly can differ by $20,000+ once you add up the extras.

  • Catering is almost always per-head, which makes your guest count the single most powerful lever in your entire budget.

  • Florals can be $2,000 or $100,000. The range is that wide. Which is exactly why you need to understand what drives the cost before you fall in love with an aesthetic.

  • Styling and stationery is where most couples are caught off guard — on-the-day stationery alone can run to $3,000-$7,000 for a large wedding.

In the guide, I break down every major category with low, mid and high spend guidance — so you can build your estimates based on real numbers, not guesswork.

What Real Wedding Actually Cost

The most valuable thing I can give you is real data. So I asked my past Honey Lane couples if they'd share their complete budget.

The Most Important Thing

A budget isn't a constraint on your wedding vision. It's the thing that protects it.

The couples I see struggling most during wedding planning are not the ones with smaller budgets. They're the ones who started without a clear, realistic picture of what things cost — and found themselves making stressful decisions under pressure, months into the process.

Getting your budget right at the start is the single most important thing you can do. Not because money is what weddings are about — but because clarity about money is what gives you the freedom to enjoy every other part of the planning journey.

That's exactly what my Wedding Budget Guide is designed to give you.
