Here is our 5 minutes with Veasna Chea...

How long have you been designing wedding stationary for? Tell us your story

I started back in 2015, not intentionally. I've always loved design and all things wedding so naturally when my cousin asked me to design her wedding invitations I didn't hesitate. Back then though I didn't think anything of it and just did it as a one-off thing. A couple of months later, a good friend asked if I could do theirs and it basically started from there. I have a little bub and work full time working in print and have done so for over 10 years now. Hopefully one day I can quit and do what I love full time.

Your stationery and designs are beautiful, where do you get you inspiration from?

Thank you! Anywhere really. Obviously social media has a huge role, we're all visual creatures and seeing something that stimulates our eyes will always stick. There are so many talented people and not just in our industry but everywhere. Everyone and everything has a story to tell and that's what I love. Hearing stories and knowing the history sometimes make it easier to design because you want to create something that is unique to the couple.

Trying to come up with a concept that is unique to me and my style can sometimes be hard but I try to stick to things I get excited about. To me that's what makes it all worthwhile, being able to put your personal touch and truly be proud of the final product speaks volumes and that shows through when you get that email or phone call from clients to tell you how much they absolutely love their stationery.

What would you say is the most important things for couples to look for when choosing their invitations?

I would say to stay true to them as a couple and let that shine through in their invitation. Have an idea of your wedding style and the type of wedding you want to have and everything will follow through. Get on social media and find inspiration.

Is there a timeline that couples need to be guided by? When should they send out their save the date, invites etc an how long in advance should they be engaging someone like yourself?

If you're wanting to do Save the Dates then I'd say anywhere between 6-10 months, by then you should have a fair idea on location and guest numbers. And wedding invitations anywhere from about 3-5 months but definitely find a stationer and lock them in especially during wedding season. It's so easy to fall in love with someone’s work only to find out they aren't available for you and be disappointed.

Should couples engage the same designer for the invitations and the on the day stationery and signage?

That depends whether your stationer offers everything you are after. The important thing to remember is to make sure you stick with the same style even if you don't have the same supplier through all your wedding stationery. Perhaps show them images of your wedding invitation or other stationery you've ordered to keep the same consistency.

Do you sell custom designs or invitation lines or are your designs all bespoke?

At the moment, I offer bespoke, but a lot of my clients come to me with an idea already in mind. It's my job to turn that into something unique to the couple while staying true to my design style. Putting out a stationery line where clients can semi-customise designs is definitely on the agenda.

You work with some beautiful quality papers and card, can you explain the difference in the products you use?

The supplier I use is the best in Australia. They offer such a huge range of luxe card stocks with beautiful colours and they are always on trend. Having the right kind of paper for your stationery makes a huge difference in the look and feel of your invitations. It can make any simple design into something beautiful.

One design advice you give to your wedding clients?

Simplicity is key, don't try to put too much on the one card.
