Why You Need to Build Private Moments Into Your Wedding Day

There’s something almost every married couple says to me after their wedding:

“I can’t believe how quickly it all went.”

And every time, I smile because I know exactly what they mean.

I know you’ve probably heard this before, but after planning hundreds of weddings, I can confidently say it’s true — your wedding day will go by incredibly fast.

Even when your run sheet spans eight, ten, or twelve hours, the day can still feel like it passes in a blink.

That’s why one of the most valuable things I encourage couples to do is intentionally create private moments throughout the day.

Why Private Moments Matter

Weddings are emotional and exciting!

You’re surrounded by people you love. There are hugs, conversations, speeches, photos, logistics, and countless moving parts all happening at once.

It’s very easy to move from one moment to the next without fully processing any of it.

Building in private moments give you the chance to slow everything down.

They help you reconnect with each other, calm your nervous system, and become fully present.

And often, those are the moments that you will remember the most. I know I do!

Beautiful Ways to Create Private Moments

There are so many ways to build these moments into your wedding day.

A First Look

A private first look before the ceremony can be incredibly special.

It gives you a chance to see each other away from the crowd and share a deeply personal moment before the day unfolds.

For many couples, it also helps ease nerves and allows them to feel more relaxed walking into the ceremony.

As a practical bonus, it can also free up time later so you can enjoy more of cocktail hour with your guests.

Letters or Notes

Another beautiful idea is writing a note to your partner.

Reading those letters while getting ready creates a quiet, emotional pause before everything begins.

It can be grounding, intimate, and incredibly meaningful.

Private Cake Cutting or Signing

Not every private moment has to happen before the ceremony.

A private cake cutting or private signing moment can create a beautiful pause later in the day.

These little windows allow you to step out of the noise and simply be together.

Even Five Minutes Matters

Not every couple wants a formal first look or scheduled private moment — and that’s completely okay.

But I still encourage every couple to do one simple thing:

Take five minutes together.

Step away from your guests.

Look at your wedding from afar.

Take in the ceremony space, your family, your friends, the atmosphere, the energy.

You spent months—sometimes years—planning this day.

Give yourself permission to stop and absorb it.

Remember What the Day Is Really About

Your wedding is not just a beautifully planned event.

It’s the beginning of your marriage.

That deserves presence.

So throughout your day, remember to pause.

Breathe.

Look around.

Soak it in.

The details matter, yes.

But the feeling of the day matters even more.

Those little pauses may end up becoming some of your most treasured memories.
